Non-Contact Surface Finish Measurement

Ra/Rz-equivalent surface texture from photometric stereo imaging at line speed. No tactile stylus interruption. Designed for powder coat, painted, and machined automotive surfaces.

Method

How photometric stereo measures texture without contact.

Photometric stereo uses 4 directional light sources fired sequentially at the same surface. The variation in surface brightness between each illumination angle is processed by the edge AI to reconstruct a surface height map — equivalent to a stylus profilometer trace, but at camera frame rate.

From the height map, the system computes Ra (arithmetic mean deviation) and Rz (mean roughness depth) per ISO 4287. No stylus contact, no fixture change, no production interruption.

This is particularly valuable for powder-coated and painted surfaces where stylus contact causes cosmetic damage and cannot be performed at 100% coverage without slowing the line.
